Next to this is a mini FireWire port. On the other side there are two USB 2. There are also large phono hi-fi style microphone and headphone sockets. Most notable of these is the HDMI port. Windows 7 MC still looks a lot like Vista.
Some screens are almost identical. As such, the differences are often small, but telling.
Guide The guide has been slightly redesigned. And some navigation features are missing. When you click on the channel name, it switches to the channel specific display, showing more upcoming shows. In Vista, Left and Right would cycle through the channels. I used to use this all the time, so its absence is annoying.
Clicking on a specific programme in the channel listing brings up a very different Programme Info page. It still has the key options for recording the show, although the buttons are redesigned, and much smaller. One definite gripe, though is the behaviour when recording shows. I occasionally like to scroll through the channel listings and marking upcoming shows to record. In Vista, this was a couple of clicks. One click to bring up programme properties. Another click to record. This makes it a lot more difficult to just scroll through recording shows. If you hit the Record Acer Aspire iDEA 500 TV-Tuner once, it will set the programme to record. Hit it again, and it sets it to record the series. Hit it a third time and it cancels the recording. This is worth noting if you're planning on installing the iDea in a cramped space -- as is the fact that the iDea has vents at both sides that must remain unobstructed.

Performance The Acer Aspire iDea offers strong if hardly neck-breaking performance. It's obviously not as quick as the all-conquering Mesh Xtreme FX60which scored 6, or as slow as the HP dxwhich scored 2, but it's perfectly adequate for a Media Center PC.
Graphics performance was a disappointment, but we expected this from its integrated graphics controller as provided by the Intel chipset. It's simply not any good at running games, so if you're after a machine that can handle 3D graphics, you should look elsewhere. One pleasing aspect of its performance is its Acer Aspire iDEA 500 TV-Tuner operation. This is barely noticeable when watching films during quiet scenes.
If you have a huge music collection, or intend to make daily use of the iDea for TV recording, it will quickly feel full, and the constraints of the chassis won't permit you to install another disk. You could always use an external USB disk, but a little more capacity here would be our first request. Under heavy load, the PSU fan soon speeds up, leaving the iDea periodically noisy enough to create an audible whoosh in an otherwise quiet room. It's easily drowned out during TV and music playback, though, and day-to-day use will rarely cause it to kick in - just be sure to leave it well ventilated. The system comes with some default resolution shortcuts, which are meant to adjust the resolution instantly.
However, these didn't work on our test TV which has a native resolution of x Acer Aspire iDEA 500 TV-Tuner we set the screen's resolution up manually.

Once this was set we were ready to roll. We also tried using the Component analogue high-definitioncomposite and DVI outputs. We were able to get a signal on the TV, but we couldn't get the graphics card to output the correct resolution for our TV using this connection, which resulted in a poor, unwatchable image on our test TV. We tested the system using Acer Aspire iDEA 500 TV-Tuner composite connection, too, but a composite output only offers a low quality image and we don't recommend using it for a large TV such as the GLCDHD. However, it would probably be fine on a smaller, standard-definition TV.

Unlike the TV, the monitor has no speakers, so we simply connected some PC speakers to the 3.
