On the upside, the main advantage at the time was that 3DLabs was the only company producing consumer-level graphics chips that had full OpenGL ICD driver support other manufacturers didn't support OpenGL at all or released a 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2 driver instead. The discrete Delta geometry co-processor chip originally featured in the Permedia NT is now integrated into the Permedia 2's core logic, resulting in a single-chip solution. Permedia 2 supports AGP texturing as well as 3D rendering in bit color depth. However, it does not support colored vertex blending, which results in games using only monochromatic lighting - notable examples are in Quake 2 and Quake III: Arena only supports vertex lighting on the Permedia 2.

The Permedia 2 is also 3DLabs' last graphics chip with Windows 95 support. Both were released in mid and again were directed at the professional 3D and CAD application market. The Permedia 3, however, had more emphasis on being directed at gaming.

Both are also Direct3D 6-compliant. Results from GLQuake bigass demo are especially bad as Permedia is playing it with lots of small freezes. Still, it is one of the few chips, which can run Quake 3, even if transparency issues and of course no lightmaps. There is major problems with lightmaps in newer engines, they just do not work, be it Shogo, Unreal or Quake 3. Permedia 2 does not support blending of colored vertexes, so developers had to choose between 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2 lighting i. Quake 2 or nothing. Direct3D gaming is a mostly a pleasant experience, but still far from perfect. Falcon 4 freezes after intro, Grim is invisible, Warbirds neeed older driver to draw textures, but there is no help for Thief where lightmaps cannot be blended.

Turok have its profile for Permedia 2, but seems broken 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2 newer driver. Older driver is fine when draw overlap is disabled. There is a checkbox for Final Fantasy VII support, but when enabled my version is still full of artifacts. Otherwise 3d image quality of Permedia 2 can be quite nice. Excluding missing blending modes, if the rendering is not correct I blame it on imperfect drivers.

There are several things wrong, but still a good show 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2 a chip. See Permedia 2 gallery Results Permedia 2 often struggles to deliver comfortable gaming at xx Older games suits it well and impact from optional true color rendering is rather small. Performance could be better but hey, if you got the card from a boss to draw some CAD you won't complain.

For comparison Matrox G looks like a good candidate to me. 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2 it 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2 also be remembered that Permedia 2 was for it's time quite CPU hungry, perhaps a price for more flexible pipeline that needed more control from the host. Into downward spiral Permedia 2 sold relatively well and got 3Dlabs into gaming space with little effort. Reviews were keen on Permedia 2 for being almost first professional product that can play games as well, even if not so fast. Later came die shrink Permedia 2V without any clock bump, only ramdac speed was raised to MHz.

Looking at the Malta print on the chip one can guess the manufacturer is ST Micro. But 3Dlabs was already touting third Permedia as gamers performance chip, yet became hell for the company. After long delay Permedia 3 arrived in summer into scorched earth with uncompetitive performance. It isn't anything worthy of the compression name, it just effectively reduces textures into quarters. But without it, the Permedia will just drop almost all textures in GlQuake. Pallete extension does not look very compatible here. It is possible to see all textures at least in default demo, though it is still not enough to enjoy regular game without some white polygons.

3dlabs Permedia 3D review

Bigass demo is a different beast, some player skins were dropped and in the heat of explosions Permedia was often giving up on bilinear filtering. Disabling texture modulation can help some d3d games to run. These tests will be remembered as endless fight for more texture 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2. See Permedia 3D gallery Quake 2 has own problems, transparency does not work and some polygons always turn black during explosions.

There are games refusing to work in any case: Falcon 4. Permedia 2. 3Dlabs can be proud to be among first gaming texture mapping 3d accelerator to the PC.

However Gaming Glint was not very useful and did not. Creative 3D Blaster VLB failed to impress, but even before its release 3Dlabs was 3D Labs PERMEDIA P2 Permedia can work with memory capacity from 2 to 8 megabytes.
